Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel is officially the Highlander of the 2018 NFL head coaching cycle.
There apparently can be only one, with Vrabel outlasting any other coach hired during that timespan.
Update on NFL 2018 Head Coach hires:
— Sam Phalen (@Sam_Phalen) November 8, 2022
ARI Steve Wilks - Fired
CHI Matt Nagy - Fired
DET Matt Patricia - Fired
IND Frank Reich - Fired
NYG Pat Shurmur - Fired
LVR Jon Gruden - Fired#Titans Mike Vrabel - 4 straight winning seasons, 3 playoff appearances, 2x AFC South Champion.
Vrabel's tenure in Tennessee is ironclad: he's never had a losing record, rarely missed the playoffs and keeps the team afloat in the division. He also earned the NFL's Coach of the Year honor this past winter.
He also got the Titans a game away from the Super Bowl in the AFC Championship game in January 2020 and helped the team navigate a major Derrick Henry injury last fall en route to a No. 1 seed in the AFC.
Vrabel has also overseen the development of defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons, who has emerged as one of the premiere interior forces in the NFL.
His coaching tree is starting to bloom, with former Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith finding success with the Atlanta Falcons. It's possible Titans defensive coordinator Shane Bowen could get head coaching interviews after leading the Titans defense to strong play this season after losing outside linebacker Harold Landry to a preseason ACL injury.
His 2018 head coaching classmates all struggled in their respective stops. Steve Wilks only made it a season in Arizona, while Frank Reich just got the boot in Indianapolis.
Vrabel, though, continues to thrive in Tennessee. As long the former NFL linebacker keeps his offense humming with the right play caller and quarterback, his seat should be comfortable for the foreseeable future.
